Sovereign Network Group: THE FOYER, ISLE OF WIGHT: CASE STUDY

Stories that make people stop and actually listen.

Case Study

The Foyer in Ryde provides accommodation and support for up to 45 young people aged 18–30 facing homelessness. SNG needed to show the reality of that work — honestly, without gloss — and let the residents speak for themselves.

It’s the kind of brief we take seriously. These aren’t PR subjects with media training. They’re real people who’ve been through real difficulty, agreeing to go on camera and talk about it. Getting that right takes more than good camerawork.

We spent time with The Foyer’s support team before a single frame was shot — understanding each resident’s story, their sensitivities, what was safe to explore. On the day, we kept things light and unhurried. Small crew, no fuss. Our interviews aren’t run off a question script — we listen, follow the thread, and give people the space to find their own words.

That approach comes from nearly two decades of unscripted broadcast production — BBC, ITN, current affairs and documentary. The ability to earn trust in front of a lens and capture something genuine doesn’t switch off because the subject isn’t a broadcaster.

Mia moved into The Foyer at 19 — dealing with substance use, unsafe relationships and no stable home. By the time we filmed her she was in her own flat, sober, and ready to talk about the journey. That’s the kind of story that lands. Not because it’s been shaped for the camera — but because it hasn’t.

The full production — a 2–3 minute hero film plus three 30-second social cuts — was delivered on schedule: a ferry to the island, a full shoot day, first draft inside a fortnight. Comprehensive pre-production documentation covered safeguarding, shot lists and stakeholder sign-off. Clean ops are part of the job, especially on sensitive commissions like this.

Howling Bear is a PACT-registered production company. Our camera work is trusted by UK broadcaster such as BBC and ITN. The scale changes. The standards don’t.

As well as being amazing stories, they have been shot in a natural and authentic way that makes you want to keep watching. I know a lot of work has gone into putting them together, and they're clearly delicate subject matters, but you've done a wonderful job.
